Every November 1st, we celebrate National Brush Day — a fun and timely reminder that consistent brushing is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for maintaining a healthy smile. At Sprout Pediatric Dentistry, we believe this day is a great opportunity to reinforce good oral habits for kids (and parents, too!).
Why National Brush Day Matters
Reinforces consistency
Young children thrive on routine. Marking a “brush holiday” helps embed the twice-a-day brushing habit into daily life.
Spotlight on technique
It’s not just about brushing — it’s how you brush that counts. National Brush Day encourages reviewing proper techniques to maximize effectiveness.
Awareness and prevention
Poor brushing is a leading cause of pediatric cavities and gum problems. Promoting good brushing early reduces decay risk and establishes habits that last into adulthood.
6 Tips to Make Brushing Fun for Kids
1) Use a timer or song
Let your child pick a two-minute song or use a sand timer so they know when time’s up.
2) Let them choose!
Allow kids to pick their toothbrush (character-themed, soft bristles, fun color) and toothpaste (fluoride, mild flavor).
3) Storytelling brushing
Turn brushing into a mini adventure — “Let’s chase away the sugar bugs on upper molars!”
4) Brush together
Kids often mirror their parents — let them see you brushing.
5) Reward charts
Use stickers or tokens for consistency. After a week of brushing twice a day, celebrate with a small non-sugary reward.
6) Check and assist
For younger children, let them brush first, then you go back and “touch-up” to ensure all surfaces are cleaned.
Technique Refresher: The Right Way to Brush
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head appropriate for your child’s mouth size.
- Apply a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste (for children aged 3+; for younger kids, use a rice-grain amount)
- Angle the brush at 45° toward the gumline, and use gentle circular strokes.
- Brush outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces, spending about 30 seconds per quadrant.
- Don’t forget to brush the tongue gently to reduce bacteria and freshen breath.
- Replace toothbrushes every 3–4 months or sooner if bristles are frayed.
Beyond Brushing: Complementary Habits for a Healthy Smile
- Floss daily once two teeth touch
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially sticky sweets
- Schedule regular dental checkups & cleanings
- Encourage drinking water (especially fluoridated water)
- Teach healthy mouth habits (don’t chew on hard objects, avoid prolonged pacifier use, etc.)
