Tongue Tie & Lip Tie

Dr. Amanda is pleased to offer Tongue and Lip Tie Services to her patients. The unknowns that come with being a parent can be challenging, and tongue/lip ties are one of those unknowns.

Some infants are born with tongues or lips rooted too close to the bottom or top of their mouths. While this might not seem like an issue, the problems they cause become apparent when mother and baby attempt to breastfeed.

Proper tongue and lip mobility are vital in an infant’s latching process during breastfeeding. If a baby cannot form a good seal, it can result in pain for the mother and frustration for the child. The result of tongue and lip ties is pain for the mother during the feeding process and an inability to consume adequate milk for the baby. In addition, tongue and lip ties diagnosed in toddlers, adolescents, and teens can pose problems that affect sleeping, breathing, shape, and development of the mouth as well as speech development.

Sprout Pediatric Dentistry can do this procedure in a short amount of time with no local (for infants) or general anesthetics. Fixing a tongue or lip tie generally takes less than ten minutes and is done with our state-of-the-art Waterlase designed to work with soft tissue and inflict minimal discomfort. Bleeding from the incision is minimal with laser revisions. Air, laser technology, and water are all the Waterlase needs to create a more comfortable, non-frightening, and, most importantly, pain-free experience for your child. Water lasers are also an excellent treatment option for parents looking for their child to have a more natural dental experience!

Most infants and kids that undergo this procedure can return to their routine right after the surgery! However, it will take time for the patient’s body to get used to the changes it just underwent—this is especially true for the tongue tie procedure. Our team will provide you with instructions and exercises on strengthening these muscles after revision to help prevent regrowth.

Here's a Fact

Tongue and Lip Ties can can affect your child’s quality of life and they are treatable!
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is the foundation of a baby's nutrition and growth. Tongue and lip ties make it difficult for babies to form a proper seal with their mouths and achieve a suction to extract milk.
Swallowing
Tongue ties make it more difficult for a child to eat foods once they transition from formula and breastmilk. When the tongue can't function properly during eating, it makes swallowing solid food for children unpleasant and challenging—causing them to "picky" eaters.
Sleep
Tongue positioning and function are essential in healthy sleep for everyone, not just adults! When the tongue can't move and rest in the proper position, it causes breathing issues, making it very difficult for children to get a good night's sleep!
Speech
Children who suffer from tongue ties will often be misdiagnosed with speech problems. While an issue could exist, allowing the tongue to move freely in the mouth can enable clearer speaking, allowing the proper experts to diagnose a speech issue appropriately if one exists!
Hygiene
Did you know that we are constantly using our tongue to clean our teeth? If your child cannot do this because of a restriction, it could lead to an increased risk of cavities and plaque on the teeth.

What Parents are Saying

“We were referred to Dr Amanda for our 9 week olds’ lip and tongue tie revision. Knowing it was impacting his ability to drink efficiently, they were able to get us in next day for an evaluation and a couple of days after for a revision. Everyone was so great with our little guy, and went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of. We even received a call the night after the procedure to ensure he was doing well. I recommend their office for all of your pediatric dental needs!”

“We had a great experience at Sprout. I brought my newborn in with the tongue and lip tie for a consultation and they were able to take care of it that day. Dr. Amanda was wonderful and the whole staff was kind and knowledgeable. Great experience!”

“We couldn’t recommend this pediatric dentist more!! Our son had his lip tie treated at two months old. The staff, hygienists, and doctor here took such good care of us from the moment we walked through the door, throughout the procedure, and even called to check in when we were at home. Everyone was loving, professional, and good at their job. We will definitely be using Sprout and Dr. Amanda in the future and would highly recommend this dentistry!”
